The current population of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam is estimated to be about 90.388 million people, which is an increase of about 2.9% from the last record of population. Historically, the population has been greater than both the population of the Philippines and Thailand. However, in recent years, the population of Vietnam has fallen below the population of the Philippines, but still greater than Thailand’s population. Based on the total land area and the total population of the country, the population density is estimated to be about 703 people per square mile.
Demographics of Vietnam
The largest ethnic group in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam is the Kinh group. This group makes up about 86% of the country. The next largest group is the Tay group, which makes up about 1.9% of the population. All the other ethnic groups make up less than 2% each. There are about 10 ethnicities that have any more than a small community. The official language of the country is Vietnamese, even though the minority groups in the country speak a variety of distinct languages.
Religion in Vietnam
The major religion in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam is Buddhism, along with some influences of Taoism and Confucianism. About 85% of the population identifies as Buddhists, even though only about 8% of the population actually practices on a regular basis. Also, about 8% of the population identifies as Christians, the majority of which are Roman Catholics. However, the Vietnamese government has had a history of suspicion of the Roman Catholic Church.

The most popular sport among the population is soccer, especially popular among the younger population. Other popular sports include cycling, boxing, swimming, tennis, chess, kungfu, and shooting.

The five major fundamental elements of Vietnamese cuisine are spicy, sour, bitter, salty, and sweet. The cooking tends to use fresh ingredients, not a lot of oil, and fruits and vegetables. The cuisine also tends to be quite healthy due to the ingredients and the way it is prepared.
