Demographics of Detroit

Approximately 53% of the people are female, while 47% of the population is male. The largest racial demographic in the city is the Black or African American group, making up about 83% of the population, a little less than six times the national average. The next largest demographic is the white group, making up about 8% of the population. Lastly, the Hispanic or Latino demographic makes up about 7% of the population.

Religion in Detroit

Only 43% of the population associates with a religious affiliation in the city of Detroit, compared to the national average of 49%. The largest religious affiliation is the Roman Catholic Church, making up about 17% of the population. The next largest affiliation is the Baptist Church, making up about 8% of the population. Detroit has serious problems with crime, having the sixth highest total rate of violent crime and the highest per capita rate of violent crime among the 25 largest U.S. cities in 2007. Nearly two-thirds of all murders in Michigan in 2011 occurred in Detroit. Although the rate of violent crime dropped 11 percent in 2008, violent crime in Detroit has not declined as much as the national average from 2007 to 2011. The violent crime rate is one of the highest in the United States.

The city of Detroit has four professional sports teams: Detroit Tigers, Detroit Lions, Detroit Red Wings, and Detroit Pistons. The Detroit Tigers participates in Major League Baseball in the American League and they play at Comerica Park. The Detroit Lions participates in the National Football League and they play at Ford Field. The Detroit Red Wings participates in the National Hockey League and they play in the Joe Louis Arena. Lastly, the Detroit Pistons participates in the National Basketball Association. However, the Detroit Pistons actually play in a suburb of Detroit, known as Auburn Hills. They play at the Palace of Auburn Hills. This is the only sports arena outside the actual city.

The population suffered a heavy fall from 2009 to 2010. The population of the city has been greater than Cleveland’s population, but less than Manhattan’s population in the last few decades.
